Watch out for the difference between markup and margin rate. A 100%
markup on cost never gives a 100% margin rate relative to the selling price. That's
exactly why this calculator shows both results.
Many entrepreneurs confuse the two. You just saw the difference.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between margin and markup? ▾
Markup applies to the cost: a €10 cost marked up by 50% gives a €15 price. The margin rate, on the other hand, is expressed relative to the selling price: on that same example, the €5 margin represents 33% of the selling price, not 50%.
Why is the price with tax shown separately? ▾
The default rate is 20%, the standard French VAT rate, but it is fully editable for a reduced French rate or the rate applicable in another country.
Does this calculator account for my fixed costs? ▾
No, it calculates a per-unit price from a unit cost. To find out how many units to sell to cover your fixed costs, use the break-even point calculator.
Is my data saved anywhere? ▾
